This course is all about the study and application of scientific aspects of sport and exercise, including physiology, strength and conditioning, biochemistry, biomechanics, nutrition and psychology; the emphasis is not only on understanding and improving individuals? and or teams? sporting performance, but also on the role of exercise in health and well-being; students study the theory behind sport and exercise, as well as applying this in practical classes and applied research.
Year 1: Students gain a good grounding in various aspects of sport and exercise science and study modules in kinesiology, sport psychology, physiology and training, coaching, nutrition and study skills; they can also take the ACSM fitness instructor?s course. Year 2: Core: exercise, physiology, sport and exercise psychology, biomechanics, applied nutrition and research design; students are also able to specialise in performance, with a module on enhancing and determining human performance, or health, where they focus on the effects exercise in the prevention and treatment of diseases and associated behaviour. Year 3: Optional work placement or study abroad year: students can choose to spend an optional placement year working in areas like applied sports science, research, or cardiac rehabilitation either in the UK or overseas; alternatively they can study abroad at 1 of the partner universities. Final year: Students can take a work placement module; a major part of this year is a research project, where students develop an experimental design, recruit and test volunteers and produce a dissertation; performance modules include environmental physiology, strength and conditioning, sports nutrition, and advanced sports psychology; health modules include biomedical implications of exercise, advanced exercise, psychology, and strength and conditioning, and nutrition relevant to improving health.
