Chiropractic is a profession that specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions which are due to mechanical dysfunction of the joints and their effects on the nervous system.

There are four Chiropractic Schools in the UK; two are independent colleges, whose courses are validated by UK universities, and two are university-based courses. The course may vary between schools but most cover subjects such as anatomy, biomechanics, pathology, physiology, orthopaedics and diagnosis, as well as practical training in adjustment and supervised clinical training.

Before becoming a chiropractor you must be registered with the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) then must undergo a one year period of employed clinical practice work which most new entrants do whilst working for an approved training practice. Qualifications BSc MChiro

Entry requirement

Graduates of any subject may be considered for entry, provided they can show a relevant background in science, normally three science A-levels or equivalent.

Skills gained

Chiropractors usually see a wide range of patients with different conditions. During your time studying it may be possible to develop more specialist skills and knowledge, such as in the treatment of:

sports injuries;
pediatrics;
animal manipulation;
Orthopedics and rehabilitation.

Career Options

The demand for qualified, registered practitioners is high and continuing to grow as a result of the increased awareness of chiropractic. Many newly qualified chiropractors begin their career working for another chiropractor in private practice as an associate whereas others may work in a group practice. Some chiropractors may work at several practices; therefore the job may involve a lot of travel within the working day.
