Film Studies covers the appreciation of all forms of moving-image over the last 150 years, focusing on photography, cinema and digital media.

Students will dedicate a lot of their time to viewing films, reading and writing, and interacting with each other about their meaning and importance. Film studies also allow you to gain hands on experience of what it’s like to be a director, screenwriter and actor. More importantly students will learn to think historically, theoretically and analytically as well as investigating the role of film in culture and society today.

Entry requirement

Undergraduate:
most universities require CCC or higher but this can vary. English is also desirable but not essential.

Postgraduate: most universities require a good Honours degree in any relevant subject.

PhD: Normally a good degree, MA equivalent in relevant subject, including film or media studies as a major subject.

Skills gained

Film studies will give you an excellent knowledge base as well as enabling you to develop key transferable skills required in the workplace. New skills will include:

  • Communication skills: through presentation work and analysis of a particular film sequence.
  • Presentation skills: through seminars and in front of an audience.
  • Research skills: gathering and collating information from a range of sources.
  • Production & practical experience: you’ll have the opportunity to create story boards, shoot and write scripts.
  • Technical skills such as IT, media production, multi-media and web-based technologies.

Career Options

Career prospects for film graduates are positive and many go on to work nationally and internationally in a range of careers. Graduates may find themselves starting a career in the following areas:

  • Advertising and marketing
  • Film making
  • Creative industries e.g. television and radio
  • Interiors photography and styling

When the time comes to think about where to head with your career you may decide to remain in education and go on to postgraduate research and study.
