Biology concerns the study of life and living organisms including their structure, function, growth, origin, evolution and distribution whilst biochemistry is the study of the chemical processes in living organisms.
Studying biology or biochemistry aims to provide conceptual and factual knowledge of core aspects of biological sciences and explore the boundary of knowledge in selected areas.

Every course varies between universities but they all aim to instruct in ways of approaching and analysing problems and equip you with skills that are valuable once graduated.

Many universities give students the opportunity to complete a placement in the third year of their course which can give you a taste of what the future has to offer.

In terms of grade requirements, most top 20 universities require grades from AAB to ABB whilst universities outside the Top 20 still require around 250 UCAS points.

Postgraduate: Most universities require candidates to have an upper second class degree or higher in Biology/ Biochemistry or a related subject

PhD: Upper second class degree or higher in a related subject.

Skills gained

As well as gaining extensive knowledge from studying biology and biochemistry, you also develop a range of practical and technical skills from lab sessions. You’ll also become familiar with specialist techniques and technical equipment which you will use frequently.

Like many other courses, biology and biochemistry offers you transferable skills which will be attractive to employers in all sectors. This includes:

  • Team skills
