Distance Learning

Distance LearningDistance Learning is designed for students who, for whatever reasons, cannot attend university in person. A Distance Learning course therefore allows students to study from their home at their own discretion. This is an ideal way for students who may have work, health issues or family commitments to successfully obtain a degree. Students also find that the personal flexibility of a distance learning programme just suits their individual needs.

There are two types of distance learning programmes. The traditional paper –based distance learning programs, that operate through assignments and study equipment being sent over to the student, and the e-Learning programme. E-Learning programmes provide all study facilities online, allowing students the added flexibility of being able to access their study information through a computer anywhere in the world.

Student Support
One of the most important aspects of a Distance Learning programme has to be the emphasis on student support. You first need to check who your tutor will be during your studies. It is extremely important that this tutor is easily accessible through phone and/or e-mail during your programme So, don’t be afraid to ask at your interview how communication will be conducted. You must also not underestimate the importance of peer support that you would normally receive if you attended a university. Distance Learning students often talk of being isolated without the help and advice of other students around them. However, Distance Learning programmes now provide online communities where student can interact through noticeboards, online discussion forums and even conference video-links. Ask at your university or college what continued support they provide throughout a Distance Learning degree.

Personal Commitment
Whilst a Distance Learning course may sound ideal, do remember that it is designed purely for those who are willing to commit most of their personal time to study. Distance Learning takes a great deal of personal organisation, commitment and self –motivation and is suitable only for those who are willing to put the time in. So, think carefully before you commit. Also, not all degrees can be studied through Distance Learning. So, ask your university or college what programmes are available.
